Professional Liability Insurance for OPSEU Members of a Regulated Health Profession
In December 2009, Bill 179 received Royal Assent making it law for all members of a Regulated Health Profession to carry Professional Liability Insurance (PLI). This law will be fully implemented by 2012.
The OPSEU Hospital Professional Division Executive has, in consultation with CG&B Insurance Group, arranged for members of Regulated Health Professions to get PLI at a discounted rate. For $40 per year, you can receive PLI that meets all the requirements of Bill 179.
This insurance is not only applicable to members of the Hospital Professionals Division, but for every OPSEU member who is also a member of a Regulated Health Profession.
Please see the attached form to find out more about this insurance offer. Click here to view pdf

RE: BARGAINING
Members have been asking where we are at with bargaining.
As you may or may not be aware, once we start bargaining with the employer, we are under a black-out regarding information.
I can tell you that we have met with the employer and are waiting for confirmation of further dates in 2012.
I know it’s not much information but be assured we are at the table and will continue our efforts to get the best contract possible for the membership.

TO: Members of OPSEU Local 329
Brothers and Sisters:
We held a General Membership Meeting on Monday September 19 2011 in order to complete our Demand Setting for bargaining as well as to approve the Local By-Laws that are required by OPSEU. The last set of by-laws for this local are dated March 1982 so you can see the importance of updating them.
Notices of this meeting and the reasons for having the meeting were distributed throughout the hospital as well as advertised on our website. A copy of the proposed by-laws was also available on our website.
I regret to announce that we were unable to approve the by-laws due to lack of quorum. I realize that there are many who do shift work. Out of 1030 members, we require 52 to meet the 5% rule under the constitution. It is disappointing to those members who did attend and the executive who worked hard on these by-laws, that we couldn’t even get enough members out to do the business of this local, let alone discuss the demands for YOUR NEXT CONTRACT! The time for demand setting is past as that was the most important part of this latest meeting.
It would appear the majority of members of Local 329 are satisfied with working conditions, benefits and wages. No quorum was needed for demand setting therefore those members who attended the meeting have set priorities and given your bargaining team the support and direction for this round of bargaining and I applaud them.
We will have to hold another general membership meeting in order to pass these by-laws.

Satirical critique hits the mark
MIDLAND – Eighteenth-century Irishman Jonathan Swift is probably best known as the author of “Gulliver’s Travels” – especially to fans of the 2010 Jack Black movie based on that book.
But Swift also penned a razor-sharp essay called “A Modest Proposal,” which famously suggested cooking and eating poor children as a way to prevent them from becoming a burden to their parents and country.
That wickedly funny satire came to mind last week with the launch of a provincewide multimedia campaign by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), masquerading as a fictional group called People for Corporate Tax Cuts...

I’d like to thank everyone who took time out of their busy lives to attend the Membership Meeting on Tuesday, January 18 in order to elect the 2011 Bargaining Team. I appreciate that prior commitments and family issues take precedent and appreciate that some people went out of their way to explain why they couldn’t attend.
CONGRATULATIONS to the following for stepping up to the plate:
Don Childs
Blue Brent
Pete Sheehan
Dave Gibson
Trent Maracle
Dave Vajda
Martha McDonald
Alternates are:
Bruce Dunn
Sean Hazell
Dan Levesque
Lynn Duquette
Lorelie Charlebois
Thanks to Gus Collins, our Staff Representative, for being there to run the election and we look forward to working with him over the next while to negotiate a new Collective Agreement.
Keep an eye on our website for future meeting dates as well as information regarding Demand Setting, which is your chance to tell the Team what is most important to you. The website is the best place for us to communicate with the members as it can reach just about everyone regardless of the shift you work or the department you work in. Bulletin boards and the Hospital Bulletin will continue to be used for posting meeting dates.
