The bargaining teams representing Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 329 and the Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene are pleased to announce that we have achieved a tentative settlement.  The settlement was achieved with the assistance of mediator Gerry Lee on Saturday December 12, 2009.

Details of the tentative settlement will be released to OPSEU members and the Board of Directors for ratification in January 2010, following which they will be publicly available.

“Both of us want to thank the members of the bargaining teams for their commitment and time.  In addition, the assistance of Gerry Lee was crucial in helping us finalize the deal.  We are unanimous in recommending this settlement.”

Rumors

December 11 2009 2000 hours - Anonymous has struck again! I said I would respond to rumors as much as possible and I will endeavor to do this every Friday - if you hear rumors, please email them to me at marth329@csolve.net and I will post responses on our website.

As far as negotiations are going, we are meeting with the employer again tomorrow.

No retro pay - as of this date, there is no truth to this - we expect to be paid retro from January 1 2009 same as we used to be when we were in the OPS.

Loss of Family Day in February - Stat days are part of negotiations and I cannot comment on this.

Negotiations lasting until Easter 2010 - I certainly hope not! There is no definitive date that negotiations will be finished - we will be done when we have the best contract we can bring to you.

We have only one year to get a contract - Not true - the date of divestment and the length of time to get a new contract are not related in any way.

I know there are more rumors out there so please send them to me and you can get your response right here. I also know it's frustrating not to know what's going on - it's frustrating for us not to be able to discuss things with the membership but that's the way it has to be.

Thank you everyone for your patience -

Martha

Dear OPSEU Member,

We are writing to you to ask for your help with an extraordinary project – the OPSEU Census.

This is the first phase of a “Social Mapping Project” (a full membership and staff census) and it will take place during the month of November.

What is the OPSEU census?

  • The census is an attempt to capture a “snapshot” or “count” of the membership and staff of OPSEU
  • The census is voluntary, confidential and anonymous
  • The decision to conduct the census was taken at the 2008 Convention and originated from the Workers of Colour Caucus
  • The census was designed by external independent consultants – TWI Inc. No one, including the consultants, will ever know who filled out the census and the data will only be reported back to OPSEU in a manner that makes identification of any individual impossible.
  • The census, as well as the systems review which forms Phase II of the project, aims to map out the issues, needs and identities of our membership. This information will help us identify barriers and increase participation for our members and staff.

If you think the Union can serve you better as a member – here’s your chance to stand up and get counted.

What do you need to do? Three things:

  1. Spread the word about the census
  2. Fill out a census questionnaire
  3. Encourage your friends and colleagues at work to do the same

The more census responses received, the clearer the membership picture becomes.

Please visit the website at www.opseu.org/countmein for more information.

Please join us in saying “Count Me In” in November.  Together we can make this important project the success it needs to be.

In solidarity,

Warren (Smokey) Thomas                                           Patty Rout
President                                                                            Vice-President, Secretary Treasurer

BARGAINING TEAM UPDATE

As you are all aware, we cannot discuss any specifics regarding issues around bargaining.

However, this is to advise that we did meet with the employer for a marathon session last week and bargaining is moving along well.

At this point, we have December 5 and 12 set aside as well as January dates for further bargaining.

If we have an offer to bring to you, the membership, there will be general membership meetings scheduled for presentation of the offer and a ratification vote.

We will keep you advised as much as possible.

Thanks Gus.

Convention 2009

Warren “Smokey” Thomas and Patty Rout were acclaimed in their respective positions of President and 1st Vice President/Treasurer of OPSEU at the 2009 Convention for another 2 year term.  It is the first time in OPSEU history that both positions have been acclaimed in the same election year.

Guest speakers at this year’s convention were Toronto Mayor David Miller, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horvath and John Cartwright, President of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council.  www.opseu.org/convention for more information.

Local 329 was doubly honored this year at convention.

Bill, Smokey and PattiBil Playter at convention09Bill Playter was awarded the Honourary Lifetime Membership Award.  Bill is known for his many years of activism and fighting for disability rights and accommodation issues.  One of his many achievements includes signing the first Workplace Accommodation Agreement to be used in the public service.  Bill served for many years as Vice President and, from time to time, Acting President of Local 329 prior to transferring to Oak Ridge where he became an executive officer for Local 307 and then again Vice President of Local 329 when the locals merged, prior to his retirement in November 2008.

wadeWade Stevenson, was presented with OPSEU’s Human Rights Award at the Annual Convention in April 2009.  The Human Rights Award is given out each year to an individual exemplifying the pursuit of equity and human rights.  Stevenson also has been instrumental in helping OPSEU create a workshop and other educational opportunities in order to share expertise with other individuals and union activists in furthering human rights in the workplace.  In accepting the award, Stevenson stated that, “This award is not just about me. It’s about teaching every person within OPSEU that as a member of the union you can make a difference.  All you have to do is say you want to.”
