Kathleen Wynne: keep your word on retirement benefits
November 1, 2016
To all members:
In February 2014, the Ontario government unilaterally decreed that OPS employees retiring after December 31, 2016, will pay half the cost of their supplementary health benefits premiums.
Until now, the government has paid the full cost for OPS retirees with 10 years of pensionable service. Now any employees without 10 years' service by January 1, 2017, will have to earn 20 years of service - twice as long - just to get half their benefits premiums covered!
Want to have health benefits after you retire? Then you'll now pay between $900 and $1,600 of your limited retirement pension on premiums. And that's just the start.Premiums will undoubtedly rise.
This is a direct attack on public servants the government claims to value so highly. The government is shattering the covenant it made with you when you were hired.
It's unfair, it's unprincipled, and it's unconscionable.
OPSEU has met seven times with the government - as recently as October 17, 2016. We've filed a policy grievance with the Grievance Settlement Board that will be heard in the spring. Some 1,400 other OPSEU members have filed individual grievances.
What can YOU do?
Tell Kathleen Wynne you're angry. Tell her she's betraying public servants. Go to keepyourword.ca and click "retirement benefits." Fill in your contact information, then click "send your letter."
Better still, call your MPP or send them an email, a postcard, or a letter.
Don't delay! Act today and tell the government - loudly and clearly - "Hands off my pension!"
